top Picturesque nature surrounding town has given Hvar its Mediterranean attraction and cheerfulness. Facing sea and south gave Hvar its splendid and inexhaustible treasury of the scenery, atmosphere and adventure. Its name derives from the Greek name - PHAROS, the name that was given to a town which was situated where today's town of Starigrad stands (Hvar became an island's centre in 13th century). Hvar gained glory and power during middle ages being an important port within the Venetian, naval empire. Today, it is centre of island's tourism and one of the favourite destinations in Dalmatian riviera - a town of smiling and courteous people, who are mostly dedicated to tourism.
The Island and Town of Korčula The town of Korcula, situated on the eastern border of the island, is an architectural example of excellently preserved, medieval, magnificent town. It is built on an islet of 3 hectares, later linked with the land of the island. Currently it counts around 1.500 inhabitants, whose main economic orientation is tourism (around 3000 sunny hours per year). VIS Relax on secluded beaches of numerous peaceful bays, in transparent blue sea and under the hot sun of Vis. Spend your time in historic ambience of mediaeval cities of Vis and Komiža that echo the voices of "a cappella" singers and visits the unavoidable Archaeological Museum and Museum of Fisheries.
The small island (5.8 sq. kilometres) about five kilometres south west from Vis, with the highest point Strazenica (240 meters). The central part is fertile field while the rest of the island is covered with macchia (short trees and bushes) or rocks. On the north of the island there is a pine forest. The settlements on the island are: Potok, Polje, Nevaja, Mezuporat and Salbunara. There are a few caves on the island, out of which Modra Spilja (the Blue Cave) is the most famous. Around noon, when the sea is calm, sunbeams that penetrate through the submarine opening in the Blue Cave, reflect from the white bottom floor and color the cave in blue and objects in the water in silver. The cave is accessible since 1884, and approach is possible only by boat. The coastal sea belt is rich fishing area.
There are few mostly uninhabited small islands in the vicinity: Jabuka, Svetac, Palagruza. On some of them there is only a light-house and some are used only for sheep pasture or fishing.
